The BEGINNING:

Prior to 1969, Juvenile Court Workers lacked an education organization.  A meeting was held February 12,
1969 to discuss the need for such an organization.  By the close of the day, GJSA had been created.  The first
conference was held in Athens, Georgia in June of 1969.

We now have an Executive Board, District Representatives and several committees and sub-committees to
handle different tasks.  As of November 2003, we are recognized as a 501(c)3 public nonprofit organization.

Members are professionals, paraprofessionals, and administrative support personnel employed by the
Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, Juvenile Courts, mental health centers, county Department of
Family and Children Services, family counseling centers, concerned citizens and other public and private
agencies in Georgia who are concerned about the issues involving troubled children.

OUR MISSION

The PURPOSE of GJSA is:

•        To promote a program of public information and education in order to build and maintain enlightened
public interests in effective programs for the delinquent, deprived, mentally ill and unruly child in
Georgia.
•        To advance the sciences, processes and arts of Juvenile Services and to further the professional
attitude and training of personnel working in the juvenile standards and corrections field.
•        To make studies and recommendations in matters pertaining to legislation affecting Juvenile Services
before the Georgia General Assembly and the Congress of the United States.
•        To improve communication among members of GJSA through the use of newsletters, resource guides,
and periodic meetings.
•        To encourage constant review and upgrading of policy and procedures within organizations
represented by GJSA members to insure basic uniformity of approach in dealing with juvenile issues and
other matters of mutual concern.

LEGISLATIVE STRATEGY:

Acting on behalf of the general membership and in coordination with the Georgia Department of Juvenile
Justice, the Executive Board of GJSA takes positions on proposed juvenile justice legislation, closely tracks
critical bills, makes individual contacts with legislators, and mobilizes the general membership to respond
to areas of critical concern to juvenile justice workers.
